French Provincial Dresser – Make a poor provincial French quality comfortable, a date cupboard or dressers and your modern home with a new coat of paint. While the highest quality French province furniture is real wood, you may have a vintage piece of your own, a thrift store or you may find a hand-me-down with laminated plastic drawer fronts. With proper preparation, you can paint plastic laminate to give you a lease with more lifestyle.
Remove all knobs, handles, and hardware from the part with a screwdriver. Clean the entire piece of furniture with a solvent-based cleaner on a cleaning cloth. Sand all surfaces with 150-grit sandpaper. Wipe with a damp cloth or a soft cloth to remove sanding dust. Paint all surfaces with an adhesion bridge designed for plastic lamination, using a brush. Allow 45 minutes to one hour for alcohol-based shellac primers to dry or two or three days for an oil-based bonding primer.

Sand the primer dry lightly with 220-grit sandpaper. Clean all sanding dust. Paint the entire cabinet, desk or cabinet with two or three thin layers of oil or latex paint. Allow the paint to dry completely before replacing the hardware. Consider oil-based paint instead of latex-based paint for hard-wearing pieces of furniture, especially those that will be used in the kitchen or bathroom.
